The Qur’an on Mountains

A book entitled Earth is a basic reference textbook in many universities around the world. One of its two authors is Professor Emeritus Frank Press. He was the Science Advisor to former US President Jimmy Carter, and for 12 years was the President of the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC. His book says that mountains have underlying roots. These roots are deeply embedded in the ground, thus, mountains have a shape like a peg (see figures 7, 8, and 9 ). This is how the Qur’an has described mountains. God has said
in the Qur’an:

“Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs? ” (Qur’an, 78:6-7)

Mountains in Quran
Mountains in Quran

Modern earth sciences have proven that mountains have deep roots under the surface of the ground (see figure 9) and that these roots can reach several times their elevations above the surface of the ground.

So the most suitable word to describe mountains on the basis of this information is the word ‘peg,’ since most of a properly set peg is hidden under the surface of the ground. The history of science tells us that the theory of mountains having deep roots was introduced only in 1865 by the Astronomer Royal, Sir George Airy. Mountains also play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth. They hinder the shaking of the earth. God has said in the Qur’an:

And He has set firm mountains in the earth so that it would not shake with you…
(Qur’an, 16:15)

Likewise, the modern theory of plate tectonics holds that mountains work as stabilizers for the earth. This knowledge about the role of mountains as stabilizers for the earth has just begun to be understood in the framework of plate tectonics since the late 1960’s.

Could anyone during the time of the Prophet Mohammed (Sallallaho Alaihe Was’sallam) have known of the true shape of mountains?

Could anyone imagine that
the solid massive mountain which
he sees before him actually extends
deep into the earth and has a root, as scientists affirm?

Modern geology
has confirmed the truth of the
Qur’anic verses.

Dear respected readers, nobody had any kind of scientific equipment to see through the roots of the mountains in 7th century and apart from that it has summarized the reason for their existence in a few verses that none other could do at that time or today’s era so elegantly and beautifully other than the mighty creator Allah himself…

Glorious Quran:

And how many Signs in the heavens and the earth do they pass by? Yet they turn (their faces) away from them! (Qur’an 12:105)

Verily in this there are Signs (for men to understand); (thus) do We try (men). (Qur’an 23:30)

Verily, in this are clear proofs and signs for people who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh). (Qur’an 16:79)

He has created the heavens and the earth with truth. High be He Exalted above all they associate as partners with Him. (Qur’an 16:3)

“Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?” (Qur’an 23:115)

Thus We explain variously the Verses so that they (the disbelievers) may say: “You have studied and that We may make the matter clear for the people who have knowledge. (Qur’an 6:105)

Verily, in this are clear proofs and signs for people who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh). (Qur’an 16:79)

How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad SAW) as a witness against these people? (Qur’an 4:41)

O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Now has come to you Our Messenger (Mohammed SAW) making (things) clear unto you, after a break in (the series of) Messengers, lest you say: “There came unto us no bringer of glad tidings and no warner.” But now has come unto you a bringer of glad tidings and a warner. And Allâh is Able to do all things.(Qur’an 5:19)

But when He delivered them, behold! They rebel (disobey Allâh) in the earth wrongfully. O mankind! Your rebellion (disobedience to Allâh) is only against your ownselves, – a brief enjoyment of this worldly life, then (in the end) unto Us is your return, and We shall inform you that which you used to do. (Qur’an 10:23)
